Seminar on Leadership Approaches Governance Emotional Intelligence: The Case of the Banking Industry of Bangladesh held at BIBM

A day long seminar was held at the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) on 22 October 2018, in its auditorium. A paper titled " Leadership Approaches Governance Emotional Intelligence: The Case of the Banking Industry of Bangladesh " was presented in the seminar by Dr.Shah Md. Ahsan Habib, Professor and Director (Training). Other members of the team are Sk. Nazibul Islam,Faculty Member, BIBM; Dr. Mohammad Tazul Islam, Associate Professor, BIBM; Atul Chandra Pandit, Associate Professor, BIBM; Shakil Ezaz, Joint Director, Bangladesh Bank ; Md.Mazharul Islam, Senior Vice President and Head of Human Resources Department, Al-Arafah Islami Bank Limited.
The study identifies the problem areas as well as success factors in Leadership Approaches Governance Emotional Intelligence: The Case of the Banking Industry of Bangladesh. A good number of participant’s senior bank executives, academicians, media representatives, faculty members, officers of BIBM participated in the seminar. BIBM Director General Toufic Ahmad Choudhury Chaired the Program. Dr. Prashanta Kumar Banerjee, Professor & Director (RD&C) of BIBM delivered welcome address.
S.M. Moniruzzaman, Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank was present in the seminar as the chief guest. BIBM Muzaffar Ahmad Chair Professor Barkat-e-Khuda, Helal Ahmed Chowdhury,Supernumerary Professor of BIBM; Md. Saiful Majid,Professor of Dhaka University..
S.M. Moniruzzaman said, Leadership is an important function of management which helps to maximize efficiency and to achieve organizational goals. The current problem in NPL management, liquidity crisis, loan scam, fraud and forgery etc. are arising because of the absence of efficient and effective leaders in banks. Ethical leadership practices at top management of the banks can address these problems properly.
He also said, good leader in banks can transform a bank from non-profitable to profitable situation. Similarly, a dishonest leader in banks can transform a bank from profitable to non-profitable situation.
According to a survey conducted by the BIBM, the current batch of leaders in the banking industry -- including the board of directors, top management, head of different departments and branch managers -- was rated “good” to “average” by bankers.
Bankers who will lead the bank should have clear knowledge about the banking activities, said Barkat-e-Khuda, former professor of the University of Dhaka.
A good relation is necessary between the top management and the board of the bank, said Helal Ahmed Chowdhury, supernumerary professor of the BIBM. Only quality leadership can prevent crisis in the banking sector, he added.
