Seventeenth Nurul Matin Memorial Lecture on Ethics in Banking held in Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM).  BIBM organized the Nurul Matin Memorial Lecture for seventeenth times styled 'Ethics in Banking' at its head office at Mirpur in the capital on 31 March,2018. Eminent economist Prof Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, Chairman of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and Dhaka School of Economics (DScE) delivered keynote speech at this program.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir presided over the session while BIBM Director General Toufic Ahmad Choudhury made address of welcome. A good number of participant’s senior bank executives, academicians, media representatives, faculty members, officers of BIBM participated in the Seventeenth Nurul Matin Memorial Lecture program.

In his keynote speech, Kholiquzzaman recommended for strengthening central bank supervision for the sake of the development of morality and ensuring good health of the bank.
A strong ethical culture is considered essential to make banks less prone to misconduct, said eminent economist Prof Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad highlighting the urgency for training on ethical norms for top ranking bank officials. Morality is being eroded everywhere in the country including the banking sector.
He pointed out that the decadence of such morality in banking sector has been more prevalent in recent days adding that the big scams, including Hallmark and Basic Bank, were happened due to lack of legal actions in financial sector.
He also said, Bangladesh Bank will have to take action against any such events. These big things must be brought to justice. If you allow these incidents, more erosion in banking ethics will take place. Officials need to take a clear idea about the virtues of morality from the beginning of their job.
BB Governor Fazle Kabir said, the central bank has been working together with the government to take action against the defaulters and bankers involved in irregularities. Bangladesh Bank is overseeing the banking sector. All organizations of the government will have to work together to check irregularities and default culture. If actions are not taken against influential, deliberate debt defaulters and their supporters, the general customers will lose their confidence on the banking sector.
Fazle Kabir hopped that the Memorial Lecture will motivate young bankers in honesty and patriotism and will move towards more professionalism in future.
