BIBM’s Annual Banking Conference 2022 ends

The two-day Annual Banking Conference 2022 organized by the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) at the institute’s premises in Dhaka concluded on Sunday.

On the First day, BIBM Governing Body Chairman and Bangladesh Bank Governor Mr. Abdur Rouf Talukder was present as the chief guests at inaugural session of the conference while BIBM Director General Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman chaired the program. Dr. Shah Md. Ahsan Habib, Professor of BIBM delivered welcome speech. 

Governor Said, it is very important for banks to demonstrate a good compliance culture to maintain their reputation and win the trust of customers, investors and regulators. Such culture is important for banks to avoid poor conduct and loss of trust.
Practically, in the context of international banking, to be in the business, banks have to be complaint. Compliance has business benefits, he added.

He also added, Compliance culture is associated with corporate governance practices. As a regulator of banks, the Bangladesh Bank has keen interest in sound corporate governance and compliance culture, as it is an essential element in the safe and sound functioning of a bank and if not followed effectively may adversely affect the banks’ risk profile. Well governed banks contribute to an efficient and cost-effective supervisory process, as there is less need for supervisory intervention. 

Eight plenary sessions held during the conference and 30 articles presented, while a total of over 700 people from home and abroad including experts, bankers, researchers and students were attended the sessions. The event organized with the partnership of GIZ Bangladesh. The media partners of the event were: Channel-i, Daily Bonik Barta and  The Business Standard. 

Mr. Ahmed Jamal, Chairman of BIBM Executive Committee & Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank was chief guest in the concluding session. He said, banking sector of Bangladesh has achieved a lot since independence of the country in 1971. Industry faced many challenges as well during its journey to economic freedom. Since inception, Bangladesh Bank continued to focus on strengthening the banking system and streamlining functioning of its various segments. 

Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) has been organizing Annual Banking Conference since 2012, a two day-long gathering aiming at bringing together experts, academicians and researchers from all over the world to exchange and share knowledge, experience and research outputs on banking and related issues. The Conference sessions cover contemporary issues and sustainability concerns on banking, finance and the economy both in the national and international context.##
